Measurement Stations

This is Miss Mendiola, our class has been working with measurement for a few weeks now. This last week we have been measuring using centimeters and meters. We worked in different centers today showing our measuring skills! We had a technology center with online games using customary and metric units. In another center we ate worms...gummy worms! The students measured the worms starting length and again after stretching them. Then they found the difference between the lengths. I worked in a small group practicing measurement word problems and measuring different things from around the room. The last center the students go to play a measurement game with Mrs. Lowden where they had to estimate lengths and graph the lengths in centimeters.

Goods Fair

We have a Goods Fair in second grade as a culminating activity to our unit on people in the marketplace.  This provides the students the opportunity to learn about concepts such as goods, consumer, producer, scarcity, income, supply, and demand.  Each student made their own goods to sell to other second graders.  These images show them with their stores set up and ready to sell.

This is a short video of our Goods Fair.

Measurement Fun with Miss Mendiola

Miss Mendiola our student teacher is lots of FUN!!!  Check out all of these fun activities that we have done with her so far in our measurement unit.  We learned that there are three feet in a yard, and we decorated a piece of paper to look like it was in our backYARD with three feet that were each a foot long and had worm rulers on them.  What a great way to remember how many feet are in a yard.  We also used tape measures and rulers to measure items around the room on a measurement scavenger hunt.  The tape measures also came in handy during our long jump competition.

Arcade

Inspired by Caine's Arcade on You Tube, we had a Recycle Fair where students used recycled items to make arcade games.  Here are pictures of students in our class with their games.
